Arts & Culture

The Cagney Company specializes in the visual and performing arts: museums and galleries, arts centers, arts education organizations, symphonies, theatres, ballet and dance companies. A practicing artist today, early on Penelope Cagney worked in some of Chicago’s most prominent art galleries. As an undergraduate fine arts student she studied textile arts in Japan and visual arts in Europe. Later she acquired a masters in arts administration, interning in development at English National Opera and writing a thesis on “Private Sector Funding in Key British Arts Organizations,” under the tutelage of MIT professor, Dr. J. Mark Davidson Schuster, an expert in arts funding and international tax incentives for giving. Living in London, Penelope conducted research into cause-related marketing for Sir Roy Shaw, former Secretary-General of the British Arts Council. Later Penelope taught graduate management courses at Columbia College and at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, and created an arts management program for American University in Cairo, Egypt. She served on governing boards in Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art New Group, the Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago, and on a auxiliary board for the Chicago Academy for the Arts as well on the Arizona Costume Institute's board (Phoenix Art Museum). She served as a panelist for grants administration for Chicago Artists International and contributed to “A Dictionary for Artists, Performers, Managers and Entrepreneurs,” (Simon & Schuster, 1998).
